‘Golden Boy of Indian Athletics’: From a village in Haryana to the top of the Olympic podium at the Tokyo Olympics, India’s ‘Golden Boy’ Neeraj Chopra once again made India proud and wrote history by winning gold at the World Athletics Championships and edging out Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem by less than a metre in the final of the men’s javelin throw event in Budapest.
India became the first country to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships thanks to Neeraj Chopra’s huge javelin throw.
Neeraj achieved his best throw of 88.17 m in his second attempt, allowing him to maintain his lead till the very finish. Nadeem, the Commonwealth Games champion, took silver with a distance of 87.82 metres. Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic won bronze with a best throw of 86.67 metres.
India now has medals in every colour at the World Championships. This is Neeraj’s second World Championship medal, following silver last year. The 25-year-old Tokyo Olympic medalist won silver at the World Championships in Eugene last year.
Neeraj has already won gold at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games, as well as the Doha Diamond League title with an 88.67 m throw.
