Kannur (Kerala), August 19: An epidemic of African swine flu has been discovered in Kanichar village in Kerala’s northern district. As a result, the District Collector has ordered the culling of pigs in two farms in the vicinity.
On Friday, a District Animal Husbandry officer confirmed the presence of African swine flu at a privately held farm in Malayampadi. District officials have ordered the culling of pigs on both affected farms as well as another farm within a 10-kilometer radius. The bodies must be buried in conformity with recognised protocols.
According to official sources, a one-kilometer radius around the pig farm where the illness was discovered has been recognised as an infected area. A 10-kilometer-radius disease surveillance zone has also been established.
For three months, the distribution, sale, and transportation of pork inside the designated area, as well as its transfer to other locations, has been restricted.
The local authorities have been ordered to produce an urgent report confirming whether pigs from the impacted farm were transported to other farms in the previous two months.
