Monsoon mayhem: The Doon Defence College building in Dehradun’s Maldevta fell and was swept away by the rushing currents of the overflowing River Bandal on Monday, as a result of the torrential downpour in Uttarakhand. This sad tragedy was caused by the state’s constant 24-hour downpour.
In light of this, Uttarakhand’s meteorological service has issued a red alert for heavy rain in six districts, including Dehradun and Nainital. The hill state is dealing with the consequences of relentless monsoon rains, which have already claimed 60 lives. Furthermore, a terrifying total of 17 people are still missing, aggravating the problem.
Heavy rains have caused landslides, essentially closing multiple roadways, including important national routes. The Rishikesh-Chamba National Highway was closed near Kunjapuri Bagardhar in Tehri owing to a landslip, while heavy vehicle traffic was suspended at Sakhnidhar on the Rishikesh-Devprayag-Srinagar National Highways. The toll on infrastructure is significant, with 1,169 dwellings and significant agricultural area destroyed.
Local officials have taken precautionary measures in response to the catastrophic situation. Due to the terrible weather and flooding, all schools in Dehradun and Champawat have been forced to remain closed. The Uttarakhand government has taken swift action, asking district judges and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to be on high alert. Their mission is to respond quickly to any emergency scenario and provide critical aid to those in need.
