Uttarakhand flashflood update: At least 12 individuals have gone missing after shops in Gaurikund were swept away

On Friday, a large landslip devastated the district of Gaurikund in Uttarakhand, resulting in several injuries and extensive damage to dwellings and businesses. The event prompted the state disaster reaction force (SDRF) to dispatch a specialised squad to begin search and rescue efforts.

Fear of casualties and destruction: According to officials from Rudraprayag’s disaster management unit, a troubling assessment estimates that 10 to 12 people may have been buried or washed away by the landslip. Gaurikund, named after the Goddess Parvati, is a pilgrimage site and the starting point for the walk to Kedarnath Temple.

Travel disruptions and stranded devotees: To add to the confusion, the Gangotri National Highway, specifically 500 metres beyond Bhatwadi, has been closed since Thursday morning due to constant debris fall. This abrupt shutdown has left Gangotri Dham Yatra pilgrims stuck along the path. Efforts are being made to clear the road and restore traffic flow as soon as possible, assuring the safety of the affected pilgrims.

Roadblocks and ongoing clearing operations: Numerous other highways in Uttarakhand have also been damaged by debris and landslides, producing major jams in various places. The Badrinath National Highway near Nandaprayag and Chhinka was closed due to debris, however was reopened the same day.

Weather woes continue:The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for continuous heavy rain in Uttarakhand in the coming days. According to the agency’s most recent report, significant rain is expected over the state until August 8, after which the intensity is expected to progressively decrease.

Post-rainfall projections: The IMD predicts extensive precipitation in the region after the predicted decrease in rainfall intensity from August 8. The situation remains fluid, and authorities are working hard to manage the landslide’s aftermath and the current weather concerns, while also assuring the safety and well-being of the local population and pilgrims.
