The local authority had started a campaign last month in an effort to shift stray cattle from the streets to cow shelters, but it doesn’t seem to be having much success.
In Ludhiana, the problem of wandering cattle is not new. The MC has conducted similar drives in the past to collect up these animals and transport them to cow shelters. Yet, the outcomes have been less than satisfying.
The present campaign was intended to be the answer to this ongoing issue when it was introduced by MC in February with great enthusiasm. Nevertheless, a month into the project, there seems to be no progress.
The situation has created havoc for the commuters, particularly during night-time when visibility is low. Roadside cattle represent a serious danger to road safety because they frequently require automobiles to swerve and brake unexpectedly to avoid hitting them, which causes accidents.
The effort to relocate stray cattle to cow shelters is ongoing and going well. However, the dairies located near Hambran road are releasing new cattle onto the streets every evening, which is hindering the progress of the campaign.
According to sources, the cattle were relocated to several gaushalas located across the city, but the shelter houses are already too small to handle the additional livestock. As a result, many of these creatures wind up being released back on the streets. In addition, after being moved to gaushalas, some of the cattle have even made their way back to the highways.
